Whittle....

whit·tle

Verb:
  1. Carve (wood) into an object by repeatedly cutting small slices from it.
  2. Carve (an object) from wood in this way.
Yes, I whittle....
(or at least I try....)
As I have said before I see something that
interests me and then I want to try it.
I figured I would never know if it is something
I would enjoy if I didn't give it a try!

I have found this to be
a fun hobby for me....
BUT you have to be more careful so
you don't get cut!

They were giving a class at a art studio
a while back and I thought --
WHY NOT!

It's pretty easy....
all you need is a knife....
this is one they recommended --
and of course a finger guard!

Then you can purchase wood plugs.
This is the easy way....
They already have some definition.
Which is good for a beginner.

Then you get started....
here are before and after shots
of my completed project....
I call him Elmer....

The front....

Side view....

The back....

When you have finished you use
acrylic paint and paint it however you'd like!

It was fun!
I have a wooden spoon that I am planning to
carve this summer.  I have been waiting until
it warms up as it is messy and I like to
whittle in the garage.

If you haven't tried whittling yet and
think it is something that would interest
you -- I would encourage you to give it a try!

Happy Whittling, my friends!

You make it sounds easy, but I'm sure it is not.
This guy is awesome. When do you create a newfie?

Elmer is adorable! You did a fantastic job with the carving and finishing with the painting. I would probably cut off a finger if I tried that! I stick myself with pins enough as it is with my sewing.

Wow, that is just so nice. You are very talented. Wish I had that childlike artist in me, but even as a child I was sorely lacking:(

Elmer looks so real to me.

Oh my goodness Beth, that is absolutely incredible!
You have definitely got a talent for whittling. I know for a fact the only thing I would achieve if I tried it would be sawdust and a pool of blood!

Wow Miss Beth I'm impressed!!
Elmer is quite a handsome dude!
I love the clothes you painted on him they give him such a great character!!
Mom is only allowed to handle rubber knives. Some how she manages to get cut just taking the knife out of the drawer.

Elmer is so totally cool!!!! You seem to be so talented in everything that you do!!! I don't know how a beginner like you could have carved out the tiny details of his face, but everything is so perfect, including the painting!!! Where does he reside now?

Your work is WAY fancier than the whittling I used to do with my grandpa sitting on the shore with our fishing lines in the water. I love your drive to try things.
